As a child, Mahogany’s favorite pastime was spending time with her uncle’s and friends’ dogs, and could often be found observing their behavior or training them in between school, homework, and sports. She began working with dogs in 2005, starting with pet sitting and boarding, and teaching dogs basic obedience while in her care. Mahogany began to learn from more experienced trainers and after initially working with two reward-based trainers, she found a balanced trainer with more than 25 years of experience that she apprenticed with and then worked for rehabilitating some of the most aggressive dogs in the SF Bay Area. Mahogany simultaneously operated an off-leash dog walking company with five staff. In 2013, Mahogany met Lisa Maze, a dog trainer with more than 30 years of experience who took her under her wing and imparted much of her wisdom and experience to Mahogany, in addition to introducing her to dog sports. Mahogany has competed in nosework, rally obedience, dock diving, and Mondioring, and her dogs have placed in all those sports. Mahogany also interned at the Michael Ellis School for Dog Trainers and completed a Train the Trainers Nosework course. Mahogany is also a Canine Good Citizen evaluator.
