Keeping Your Dog Safe and Calm on 4th of July
Independence Day comes alive with fireworks and celebrations—but for many dogs, the loud noises and bright lights are overwhelming. Here’s how to keep your dog safe, secure, and comfortable on Independence Day.
1. Create a Safe Indoor “Den”
Keep your dog inside and close windows and curtains to muffle the noise and flashes. Set up a cozy, quiet space with their favorite toys, a blanket, and a crate if that makes them feel secure. Playing white noise or calming music can help reduce stress.
2. Update Identification
Ensure your dog’s ID tags are current and their microchip information is up to date. More dogs go missing on the 4th of July than any other day of the year. Taking simple precautions like GPS collars or secure harnesses can prevent a heartbreaking situation.
3. Tire Them Out Earlier
Exercise is key. Give your dog a long walk or mentally enriching training session early in the day. For help with training around distractions, check out our blog post: Why Your Dog Doesn’t Listen Outside the Home (And How to Fix It).
4. Use Calming Toys and Treats
Give your dog a puzzle toy, lick mat, or frozen stuffed Kong to keep them engaged and distracted during the fireworks. These calming activities can help reduce stress and give them something positive to focus on.
Some of our favorite items to consider:
5. Consider Desensitization Training
If your dog struggles with fireworks year after year, desensitization training can help. Our private in-home training programs can be tailored to address sound sensitivity and build long-term confidence.
6. Use Board & Train for High Anxiety
For more serious cases, our Board & Train program offers a safe, structured environment with 24/7 expert supervision. This immersive experience allows dogs to work through fear-based behaviors with professional guidance.
7. Consult With Your Veterinarian
If your dog experiences extreme anxiety, consult your vet about natural calming supplements, anxiety wraps, or temporary medication. Always talk to a professional before giving your dog anything new.
8. Be Present
Your presence makes a difference. Staying home with your dog during fireworks can provide the comfort and reassurance they need. Remain calm and relaxed—your energy matters.
